White Hot: The latest stainless steel tableware fashion

What’s the color of the year?

Some say it’s the hues of spring—yellow and green. Others believe it’s still metallics: gold, silver, bronze, and electric blue.

Whatever the shade of the year is, may it be sweet or flashy, Multiple Choice by topchoice’s new white collection is a perfect match.

Through the years, Multiple Choice by topchoice holds the reputation of making high-quality porcelain Stainless Steel Tableware—from saucers and espresso mugs, to cookie plates, dinner plates, salad plates, and gourmet plates and bowls.

“Our products are chip-resistant,” assures Willie Tan, Topchoice’s creative director. “Unless accidentally or intentionally thrown into the ground, Multiple Choice by topchoice goods will not break even if put under 1,550 degree Celsius of heat!”

This year, the Stainless Steel Tableware brand returns to the basics by going “white-out”. All-white, yes, but with an emphasis on their shapes and themes.

First, there’s the “Urban White,” an aesthetically uncomplicated range that suits both casual and formal table setting. It is inspired by city life, designed for those craving a modern, stylish, basic, and functional lifestyle.

“Trendy,” “metropolitan,” “very round,” and “curvy,” are the words Tan used to describe this line composed of basic plates and deep bowls that complement each other as multi-functional pieces to create a practical and modern impression. The gourmet plate, for example, perfectly fits into the salad bowl to serve as cover.

Next comes the “Fountain White” series. As its name suggests, it represents the fountain—graceful, curvaceous, and liquid in shape. “This set’s shape makes it outstanding when matched with other colors,” says Tan.

For Zen lovers, there’s the “Organic White,” which follows today’s trend in replicating the look of nature: pure and minimalist. The cups, plates, saucers, and bowls found in this array are molded after things found in nature like rocks and leaves. According to Tan, this variety’s luxurious creamy color reminds one of the spa.

Of course, apart from the purely white, there are also some lines in the collection with some hints of tint. There’s the “Christmas White” range with a red, “Guam” motif. The star of this group is the red gumamela printed on white background.

At the other side of the rainbow is the “Wonderful World” set which features white with four colors: orange, green, pink and yellow.

Although white has a reputation of being easily attracted to dirt, Tan guarantees their products are easy to clean and will stay white forever. Breakable, yes they are, but topchoice products make dining experience truly memorable, he adds.

“Porcelain makes the sound of eating very delicious. Coffee, for example, tastes better when sipped from a porcelain mug than a plastic cup,” he points out. “More than just getting themselves full, people eat to have a great experience. That’s exactly what Multiple Choice by topchoice products are made for.”

Multiple Choice by topchoice is available at Rustan’s.

Stainless Steel BBQ

Gas-fueled stainless steel grills typically use propane (LP) or natural gas (NG) as their fuel source, with gas-flame either cooking food directly or heating grilling elements which in turn radiate the heat necessary to cook food. Gas grills are available in sizes ranging from small, single steak grills up to large, industrial sized restaurant grills which are able to cook enough meat to feed a hundred or more people. Gas grills are designed for either LP or NG, although it's possible to convert a grill from one gas source to another.

The majority of gas grills follow the cart stainless steel grills design concept: the grill unit itself is attached to a wheeled frame that holds the fuel tank. The wheeled frame may also support side tables and other features.

A recent trend in gas grills is for the manufacturers to add an infrared radiant burner to the back of the grill enclosure. This radiant burner provides an even heat across the burner and is intended for use with a horizontal rotisserie. A meat item (whole chicken, beef roast, pork loin roast) is placed on a metal skewer that is rotated by an electric motor. Smaller cuts of meat can be grilled in this manner using a round metal basket that slips over the metal skewer.

Silver where? $10,000 in kitchenware goes missing
Dining equipment theft serves up increasing meal costs

There have been 1,225 pieces of dinnerware including cups, plates, bowls, and 213 pieces of silverware stolen from Hilltop Commons this year according to Associate Director of Residential Dining, Kathy Kittridge.

A reported $5,000 worth of dishes has been taken from the commons throughout the course of the first semester. Currently, tabletop displays state the number has climbed to $10,000.

A first-year resident from Oxford Hall said that he has taken a basic set of silverware for his room because he didn't have any to use. Another student admitted to having taken cups, bowls and silverware on occasion, as well as a salt, pepper, cinnamon and sugar shakers. She blamed her thefts on bets placed with her friends.

Some students feel the cost of the dishes they stole does not negatively affect the university because of the high cost of the meal plans.

"It's just too bad, really, we get all these brand new dishes and make an effort to have nice ones for the students to use, then they go and take them from us. At Stewart Commons, students were not allowed to bring their backpacks into the cafeteria ... so many dishes were being stolen that we would run out of them halfway through meals, which led to us having to go out and buy more," said Gina Conners, Customer Service Supervisor.

"We have been concerned with the amount of theft at Hilltop Commons and will need to work on security for next semester," Kittridge said.

Kittridge was hoping to get the dishes back to prevent unnecessary heightened costs for the university and dining services which could lead to a rise in the cost of student bills. Tara Loomis, Director of the Department of Residence Life, suggested an amnesty box be put in the Hilltop Commons for students to return stolen dishes.

Conners agreed that this was a good idea and something that she would be willing to do, if it meant that some of the dishes would be retrieved. Conners also suggested students not be allowed to bring backpacks into the commons.

Conners said she has spotted students leaving the commons with bulges under their clothes, which she said were dishes but said she is unable to stop them since it is considered an invasion of privacy unless the dishes are fully visible.
